5 out of 5 stars This one is my Sandra Brown favorite!   December 24, 2008
Rheadawn Brown (Smyrna, TN USA)
I read this book about ten years ago, and it still remains my all-time Sandra Brown favorite. It is a suspense held thriller that includes sexually explicit scenes that puts you exactly where the action is.

4 out of 5 stars Great story, but ending a little less belieavble   December 23, 2008
surprised reader (USA)
Overall, I loved this story and the main plot. Mistaken identity made in a plan crash and the crash victim (Avery) undergoes reconstructive surgery and ends up taking someone else's identity. Before she can reveal her identity, she finds that the woman's husband (Tate), a senatorial candidiate is an assasination target. His wife (Carol, her new identity) was in on it. During her recovery, Tate is there daily, giving her encouragement and Avery finds Tate as the center of her world. He's very caring and respectful, but not affectionate toward the woman whom he thinks is his wife.

Carol was not a nice person and was horrible to her Tate and their daughter Mandy and Mandy shows signs of emotional abuse from her mother and from the crash. That part is heartbreaking and when Avery decided to assume the identity of Carol to save Tate, she takes on the responsiblity of helping the troubled child, which is very touching.

Tate is very skeptical of Carol's (Avery's) intentions and is downright rotten to her (but with Carol's past actions, it's warranted). He knows there's something different and finds himself falling for her, but keeps resisting because of Carol's horrible past actions. The way that Avery is treated is downright cruel at times and while she understands it's Carol, it's tough to hear at times. There's an attraction between Avery and Tate, but Tate's confused by it and often thinks it might be just physical and acts accordingly, which is also difficult to read. (listen)

I saw a few comparisons in the reviews, to the characters in the show Dallas and I have to say, it's spot on. Actually, if you visualize those characters, it's funny to see how the story takes shape in your head. In the book, they actually visit South Fork ranch.....so there is a connection.

I listened to the audioversion by Dick Hill and he did a stellar job telling this story. He does a great job portraying those with a Southern accent. The only thing that I had trouble with was motive behind the murder plot. It just seemed so far fetched and so out in left field that it just wasn't believable. Aside from the motive, I really enjoyed the book and it held my interest and enough so that I went through several passages again. Overall, I would recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars How can they give this inanity five stars?   October 7, 2008
Hubert Cross (San Marcos, Nicaragua)
The book begins as a page turner. A plane crashes, and Avery, a failed T.V. reporter is one of the few survivors, but is mistaken as the Senator's candidate's wife. In her hospital bed she cannot speak or communicate in any way and after weeks, ends up falling in love with her very supportive "husband". When she recovers, she doesn't have a heart to straighten matters up.

But the real wife had been the worst kind of slut, and her "husband" is keeping up the marriage up only for appearances until he wins the race. He spends the rest of the novel divided between wanting to make love to her, and verbally abusing her for her previous unpardonable behavior.

That was all the plot, at least up to page 309 which is where I gave up on the book.

I have read four of five of Sandra Brown novels, and I am becoming convinced that it is just her style to write half baked page turners that leave the reader half satisfied, like, "Wow! This was soo good, but I could have been so much better if she had made this and that changes".

Her plots stretch credibility to the point that you have to make a conscious decision to force yourself to believe all their silliness to be able to enjoy her novels.

But this was a page turner only at the beginning, then it bogged down into inane and repetitive verbal abuse, until I tossed the book away saying "Aw, f*** it!"

5 out of 5 stars My absolute favorite book...   May 23, 2008
Mary Casey
I have owned a copy of this book for a long time, and when it disappeared, I went right to a used book store to get another copy. I read it several times a year...whenever nothing else on my bookshelf appeals to me. I just finished rereading it for the umpteenth time, and once again I loved it!

The relationship between Tate and Avery (as Carole), the twists in the end, and the great story of a strong Texas family all make this a winner for me. I am sure I will read it countless more times as the years go by, and I know I will always enjoy it as much as I did the first time.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!   April 29, 2008

I love this book! I've owned it for years and read it 3 or 4 times, everytime enjoying it as much as the first time. One of the best romance books, contemporary or other. Witness is also great, but Mirror Image is in a class of its own!!!
Mirror image is the story of a woman, Avery Daniels, accidentaly living the life of Carole Rutledge who is the wife of Tate Rutledge. Tate is a candidate for the senate and thus obligated by circumstances to keep his sham of a marriage until after the elections. Surprisingly, his wife is not the shrew she used to be before her accident and he can't be sure whether she's acting just to avoid the divorce or not. Avery on the other side feels very attracted to Tate and when she finds that someone's after his life decides to keep her true identity a secret so that she can protect him.
Mirror image is one of my favorite books, one I've read already 3 times and refused to lend to anyone out of fear they might keep it for themselves! I absolutely love it and can't praise it enough. A must for romance fans.
