5 out of 5 stars Free and legal music.   April 14, 2006

This is a great way to collect music without the fear of lawsuits from the recording industry. The software does everything it claims to do. I have a broadband connection, I am not sure how well this will work with dial up.

1 out of 5 stars No longer works! Beware, beware   September 22, 2005

I purchased this software several months ago and was working fine until recently when all of a sudden it just stopped working altogether. Whenever I would try to run the program it keeps asking for the license # (which is not supposed to do this, only when installing the software for the first time); so I enter the # anyway and every time I get error messages. I did this over a few weeks while at the same time emailing tech support, 5 times already and have not gotten any response from them. I'm thinking they may be shutting business? Who knows, but don't understand why they're not responding to my emails plus I also emailed jambalaya brands, the company and it bounced back to me as undeliverable so my thinking could be right.
Jambalaya Brands or Audio Xtract people, if you're reading this, don't cheat your customers by not responding to their emails or if you're closing business, then stop selling your products to the public!
Anyway buyers, be aware before you decide to purchase. (BTW, I uninstalled and reinstalled the software to my computer but got the same results.)

3 out of 5 stars It Does What It Claims, BUT...   April 17, 2005

I first saw this software at the local Office Depot and found the idea of recording off of internet radio interesting enough to buy a copy. I mean, with the RIAA trying to sue file sharing people out of existence I needed to find a safer alternative to my favorites: Limewire and WinMX.

OK, first the good stuff:

1. It does do what it claims. You can record off of internet radio stations.
2. The sound quality is very good (on some stations), rivaling that found on CD's. You need to select a station that is 128 bitrate with a 44,100 sample rate.
3. It will allow you to record several different audio streams simultaneously which is a very nice feature.
4. You CAN burn CD's with this software. Not a big deal these days but, hey, it works.

Here are the negatives:
1. Audio Xtract does not advertise the fact that it is compatible with only one format of internet radio, something called ShoutCast. I found this out by digging through the FAQ's on the company's website (see link: http://secure.nsscheckout.com/solo/customers/support.asp?AID=2452290&mode=FAQ). So, if you want to record your local station and it isn't supported by AudioXtract then you are out of luck.

BTW: If you are seriously condsidering purchasing this product then you should carefully read ALL of the FAQ's posted on their site.

2. There are frequent dropouts of the streams (at least this was what I experienced with the stations that I was interested in). This is, of course, very annoying. The FAQ for this blames internet traffic and the station. This makes sense. However, since AudioXtract only supports one type of station software, this heavy traffic may be caused by AudioXtract users.

3. Sometimes everything locks up. The FAQ for this says that this is a known problem (read: bug) and that they are working on it. Hmmm.

4. Sometimes you can't connect to a station on the list. See #2 for probable explanation.

5. The songs are chopped by the program based on the info broadcast by the station. This means that unless the station is dead-on (unlikely) you end up with cuts that are way, way off. In other words, the beginning of a song is late and the tail end of the song has the beginning of another one spliced on. Not exactly as automatic as they would have you believe. There is a way around this, though. You can record the station stream as one big file (it is an option in the software) and then use a sound editing program to chop it up yourself. Well, this is OK as long as you can find a station that doesn't fade one song into another or have a DJ talk over the music. Once again, it may be hard to find a station that doesn't do that because of the limited number of AudioXtract compatible stations that are available.

This software really rocks. I can set the program to record music all day long and just let it go. I come home and my hard drive is full. You can record 8 stations at a time which is very helpful if you want alot of music in a short period of time.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, internet music! Free Free Free   December 5, 2004
Jake (Center of USA)
I looked forever for a way to record internet music. My way took a long time and many steps (frustrtaing)
Then I found Audio Xtract. With more than 3,000 songs downloaded in my library I have great music...which cost me not a CENT. Forget satellite radio and the pay services. I get to download what I want and play it back any time. Has been great fun. Well worth the money!
